Preparing For The Heat WAVE 100 Degrees in USA Mountains Killing People June 2012

The region braces for one of the hottest and longest heat waves in years. It arrives Thursday. Highs could come close to 100 degrees on Friday, with highs in the 90’s possible Thurs-Mon. Workers with Buncombe County’s Council on Aging are very concerned for the large number of low income elderly without air conditioning or good fans. Wendy Marsh with the Council says elderly who live in mobile homes and are isolated are at especially high risk for heat stroke or heat exhaustion. The Council on Aging will be getting 140 new fans within the next few days. But Marsh is not sure if they will be able to get them to the needy by the hottest days of the heat wave. She advises seniors without good cooling systems to get to a cool place like a mall or grocery store during the hottest parts of the day. By the way, the all-time record high in Asheville is 100 degrees, reached on August 21, 1983.by Karen Wynne
