A fresh earthquake of magnitude 5.1 hit central and northern Italy Sunday. The same area had already experienced two powerful quakes on May 20 and May 29, leaving 24 people dead.

According to Italy’s Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), the latest quake occurred at around 21:20, with its epicenter in the town of Novi, near the province of Modena in Emilia Romagna region.

No casualties were reported, but some buildings were reportedly further damaged by the tremor which was also felt in northern cities such as Milan and Padova.

“The base of the balcony has dropped off. All my home was destroyed by the quake. The five-minute quake ruined my house I lived for 30 years. Look there (balcony), once the wall falls, my house will completely collapse,” said Orazio Rullo, a local resident in Novi.

Both Rullo and his father are ordinary workers. It’s no easy job for his family to earn money before the earthquake due to the economic recession.

His house was just refurbished last month, but the earthquake put all their efforts in vain.

“I come home everyday to see the house. My whole family has been working hard for it for 35 years. We worked very hard. Now I really don’t know how to continue my life. There had already been a financial crisis. What can we live on?” said Rullo.

According to earlier reports, the 5.8-magnitude earthquake on Tuesday claimed 17 lives and the 6-magnitude quake on May 20 killed seven people.

The Great Day of Annihilation…
