In this video, Betty demonstrates how to make Painted Christmas Sugar Cookies. These are great, buttery cookies that are fun to make and paint with children.

1 cup butter
1 cup confectioner’s sugar (This is the same as powdered sugar or icing sugar.)
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
½ teaspoon salt
2 egg yolks
½ teaspoon water
gel food coloring

In a large mixing bowl, beat butter and sugar together using medium speed of an electric mixer. Add egg and vanilla. Beat well. In a medium-sized bowl, stir salt into flour. Beat into egg mixture to make a dough. Chill cookie dough at least 1 hour. Cut chilled dough into 2 equal parts, returning 1 part to the refrigerator. Place the other part on a lightly floured surface and roll until 1/8-inch thick.

Cut with cookie cutters, as desired, and place cookies on ungreased baking pans. Make Egg Yolk Paint: Beat 2 egg yolks with ½ teaspoon water. Divide into 2 equal portions, placing the portions in small, separate bowls. To each bowl, add gel food coloring, as desired.

(Red and green are nice for Christmas.) With a small brush, paint cookies using desired patterns. Bake at 375 degrees (F) 8 to 10 minutes, until golden brown around the edges. Cool cookies on wire racks, and then place them on a nice serving plate. These cookies will be spectacular at Christmas! Love, Betty
